What is the best resolution for large-format printing?

Resolution is the amount of detail in an image. Digital images are measured by the number of pixels per inch (ppi). For printing, resolution is measured by the number of dots printed in a linear inch (dpi). The higher the resolution, the larger the file size.

The resolution of the image on the top right has more dots per inch (dpi), making it more detailed than the image below that has less dpi.

NOTE: Most images downloaded from the internet are compressed for screen viewing and will not reproduce well when printed, especially in large-format printing. To ensure your image will reproduce correctly, download images that are intended for print production.

What file format should I send for large-format printing?

A JPG file at the highest resolution possible will allow for the best results. PDF and PSD (Adobe Photoshop) files are also acceptable.

If possible, please also send a hard copy of the image that can be scanned to optimize quality. With documents that include linked photos, be sure to include the photo files with your submission.
