No School, Tuesday, Feb. 2 Due to Inclement Weather
Classes are canceled and schools are closed in the Dubuque Community School District on Tuesday, February 2, due to approaching inclement weather and the Winter Storm Warning advising travel only in an emergency through the remainder of the day.

District Announces New Head Coaches
The Dubuque Community School District is pleased to announce the selection of three high school head coaches, pending School Board approval at its February 8 meeting.
Mike Hoskins has been named head football coach at Hempstead High School, Jordan Steuer has been named head boys soccer coach at Hempstead High School, and Coleman Heaney has been named head boys soccer coach at Dubuque Senior High School. In December, Sharon Klein was also named the head girls cross country coach at Hempstead. Each will take the reins of their teams after being assistant coaches in their programs.
New 2016 Kindergarten Kick-Off Event at Dubuque Public Elementary Schools, Feb. 16
A new Dubuque Community School District event will help give families a jump-start on preparing for kindergarten.
The Kindergarten Kick-Off, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 16, gives families the chance to drop-in between 3:30-6 p.m. at 12 of Dubuque’s public elementary schools. At the event, families will complete initial kindergarten paperwork, receive a packet of paperwork to take with them, and have a chance to meet school staff. As a charter school, Prescott Elementary School will begin kindergarten sign-up during its enrollment period in late February.

Free Four-Year-Old Preschool Registration Begins Monday, Feb. 1
Registration for free four-year-old preschool in the Dubuque Community School District will begin on Monday, Feb. 1. This includes Dubuque’s 12 public schools offering preschool through the Statewide Voluntary Free Preschool Program.
Parents and guardians may register students in person at the selected site, beginning when that site’s office opens on February 1. Proof-of-age, preferably a birth certificate, is required to register a student. A passport or signed immunization record will be accepted if necessary.

Free four-year-old preschool is open to students who are four by September 15. For additional registration questions, individuals should contact the site they are interested in registering at.
Space may be limited in some facilities and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment for preschool is not based on geography and all sites are open to Iowa residents.

The Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program for Four-Year-Old Children is funded by the State of Iowa and facilitated locally by the Dubuque Community School District.
FBI Representative Shares Internet Safety Tips
On January 7, FBI Victim Specialist Karen Gale spoke to over 250 parents and community members about Internet safety and ways to protect children from the dangers and consequences that can occur via technology.
Her message to families was a straightforward one – it is important for parents and family members to monitor their child’s technology usage and have open conversations with them about it.

FBI Internet Safety Presentation, Jan. 7
The Dubuque Community School District will host “Internet Safety for Parents and Community,” presented by a representative from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Washington Middle School Auditorium. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Proposed 2016-2017 School Calendar Posted for Feedback
The Dubuque Community School District has released its proposed calendar for the 2016-17 school year. We invite you to view the proposed calendar by clicking the link below.
The first full day of school in the proposed calendar is August 23, with orientation programs being held on August 22. Given this start date, the last scheduled day of classes is May 26.
Similar to this year’s calendar, the draft calendar includes 1,100 hours, with a 20-hour contingency to cover weather-related late starts or early dismissals. Any late starts or early dismissals that would cause the total number of instruction hours to fall below 1,080 will be made up. Full days cancelled due to weather will be made up at the end of the year as they are currently.
