ALC Economics Class Creates ‘Key City Coops’

Students in an economics class at the Alternative Learning Center aren’t spending all day cooped up in their classroom. Instead, they are bringing their class work to life by creating “Key City Coops,” a school business building and selling chicken coops and chicken tractors.

National Conference Highlights Dubuque Re-engagement Efforts

From Wednesday, March 16 through Friday, March 18, city, education and national experts will gather in Dubuque to provide perspectives on how to re-engage the millions of youth and young adults in Dubuque and other cities across the country that have not graduated from high school.

Approximately 150 dropout re-engagement experts from 14 different states will convene in Dubuque to discuss policies and strategies for dropout re-engagement. Attendees will learn about Dubuque’s re-engagement landscape and explore ways to link re-engagement efforts with workforce development and Opportunity Youth strategies.

Dubuque Senior Speech Team Earns All-State Honors

The Dubuque Senior High School Speech Team upheld its reputation as a speech powerhouse on February 20 during the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group All-State Festival held at Iowa State University.

The Senior team claimed three Critic’s Choice Banners for outstanding performances of the festival in Ensemble Acting, One Act Play and Solo Mime. The team also received the E. Wayne Cooley Sweepstakes Trophy, awarded to the school that qualifies the most performing entries for the All-State Festival.

The varsity team accomplished this by qualifying an IHSSA state record of 17 performing events (plus two non-performing). In addition, the Senior ninth grade team qualified 5 events (2 performing, 3 non-performing).

Dubuque Named a Grade-Level Reading Pacesetter

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, a collaborative effort to increase reading proficiency among children in low-income families, recently announced its 4th Annual Pacesetter Honors. Dubuque was one of 38 communities across the nation recognized as Pacesetters for “leading by example” to solve one or more of the challenges that can undermine early literacy – school readiness, school attendance and summer learning.

“Pacesetter Honors are among the highest awards presented by the Campaign,” said Ralph Smith, the managing director of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. “We are very proud of these communities and the numerous organizations and individuals behind them for joining forces and working tirelessly to uplift children and families. They remind us that we are seeing great progress and real results all across the country.”

District Offering Free Senior Citizen Activities Pass

The Dubuque Community School District is now offering a free activities pass for senior citizens to attend district events at no cost. The pass is valid for district athletic events, plays and musicals. It is not valid for intra-city competitions or IGHSAU/IHSAA tournaments.

The complimentary Senior Citizen Activities Pass can be picked up at the front desk of the Forum, 2300 Chaney Road, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. by any resident of the Dubuque Community School District age 65 and over. To receive a pass, an individual must present a valid photo ID with a home address.
