Athletic Events Moved Earlier or Postponed Today, Jan. 5

Due to the approaching winter storm, the following schedule changes are in effect of athletic events in the Dubuque Community School District today, Monday, Jan. 5:

  • The boys sophomore basketball game between Hempstead and Senior high schools has been moved to 4:30 p.m. at Hempstead. The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. It will be held in the school’s new gymnasium. The girls sophomore game will be held as scheduled at 4:30 p.m. at Hempstead in Moody Gymnasium.
  • All freshman athletic events in the district are postponed for today and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Career Exploration Fair for High School Students and Parents, January 6

A Career Exploration Fair for high school students and their parents throughout the Tri-State area will be held from on Tuesday, January 6, from 5-7:30 p.m. in the new gymnasium at Hempstead High School.

Booths will be set up throughout the gymnasium in conjunction with the Hempstead vs. Senior basketball games being held in the school’s Moody Gymnasium. Students and families can visit the fair before the games, between games or at halftime.

Hempstead Student Named US Senate Youth Delegate

Jack Hostager, a senior at Hempstead High School, was recently named one of two delegates selected to represent the state of Iowa at the 53rd U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington D.C. Hostager will participate in a week-long government and leadership education program in the nation’s capital and receive a one-time $5,000 college scholarship.

2014 FIRST LEGO League Winners Announced

The 2014 FIRST LEGOLeague (FLL) regional event was held Saturday, December 6, at Roosevelt Middle School in Dubuque. The event is part of a global robotics competition that seeks to introduce students to problem-solving and research skills through robotics competitions on the state, regional and global levels.

In addition to hosting by the Dubuque Community School District, the program was supported by many Dubuque-area businesses who provided mentors and support throughout the season.

Sageville teacher named state finalist for nation’s highest honor in math, science teaching

Ann Johnson, a second-grade teacher at Sageville Elementary School was one of seven Iowa teachers recently named state finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

New Hempstead High School Volleyball and Cheerleading Head Coaches Named

The Dubuque Community School District has selected the new volleyball and cheerleading coaches for Hempstead High School, pending approval by the Board of Education at its next meeting.

Travis Wills, assistant men’s volleyball coach at Clarke University, will assume the volleyball position and Shawna Auderer, the cheerleading assistant coach for the 2013-14 season, will become the head coach this year. District Seeks Comment on NCLB Waiver Application

The Dubuque Community School District is collaborating with eight of the largest school districts in Iowa to submit a waiver request to the United States Department of Education from the following requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also referred to as No Child Left Behind (NCLB): School Choice, Supplemental Education Services (SES), and associated set-aside funds.  Read More about “District Seeks Comment on NCLB Waiver Application”
