The Dubuque Community School District Health and Wellness Services Office will host a presentation on synthetic drugs tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Washington Middle School. Admission is free and the community is invited to attend.
The presentation by Erin Foster, the area substance abuse council director of Linn County Prevention, is geared toward parents and other interested community members. It will discuss what synthetic drugs are, what dangers they present, how easy they are to obtain, how to tell if someone is using them and other warning signs.
According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, synthetic drugs are dangerous substances often sold in legal retail outlets as “herbal incense,” “potpourri,” “bath salts,” or “jewelry cleaner.” They are labeled “not for human consumption” to mask their intended purpose and avoid Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory oversight of the manufacturing process and are often marketed as providing a legal high.
