Curriculum

The Dubuque Community School District utilizes the resources of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). ASCA is an organization that supports school counselors’ efforts to help students focus on academic, career and social/emotional development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society.

There are four components to the ASCA National Model that guide a comprehensive counseling program: foundation, management, delivery and accountability.

Classroom Guidance

The Venn diagram below shows the nine topics that are the focus of our counseling curriculum. At the elementary level, the skills needed to master these topics are taught in large-group counseling classes on a regular basis. In middle school, some of these topics might be combined in order for students to make the connections in different settings. By high school, the goal is for students to see how all of these skills connect in their lives.
